Bellingen and Surrounds

Sitting on the Bellingen River, Bellingen offers much to do and see while in this beautiful part of New South Wales. In its surrounds there are nature walks, waterfalls and national parks to explore, while in town there are festivals, markets and other events to enjoy.

Boating is one of the attractions to this region, both the Kalang and Belligen Rivers flow through the nearby Dorrigo National Park to the ocean. They meet at the mouth (Urunga), kayaking, boating are very popular here along with taking the board walks that take you to the swimming and surfing beaches on the coast.

Fishing

Fishing is another major attraction, freshwater fish can be found in the rivers and towards the mouth. A variety of saltwater fish can be found at the mouth, the islands and the ocean beaches, such as whiting and flathead. Both rivers are declared fishing havens. Get your license, your rods and tackle, some bait and off you go.

Urunga

While Bellingen is in the hinterlands of the coast, Urunga is on the mouth of the river to the South Pacific Ocean, just to the east. There is a boardwalk that you can take across the lagoon to the scenic islands and ocean beaches. You can also visit the Urunga Museum in the old School of Arts building, Morgo Street.

Historic Walk

Take the historic walk in town to see this quaint and picturesque town, heritage buildings dot the streets, particularly Hyde Street.

Bellingen Museum

A visit to the Bellingen Museum at 33-39 Hyde St. can give you more insight to this delightful town, as well as its pioneers, families, settlers and builders who came here in the early years.

Surrounds

Dorrigo National Park

With a wide variety of wildlife and tall, deep rainforests, Dorrigo National Park has steep waterfalls, numerous walks and Aboriginal heritage. These ancient forests that date back to the time of the dinosaurs are part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area.

Bellinger National Park

Take only photos and only leave footprints. The Bellinger National Park is untouched by human hands, you will need to be experienced to explore this park. There are no marked walks, but at the Griffiths Lookout you get expansive views all the way to the coast.

There are hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, caravan parks, backpackers, holiday parks, cabins and farmstays available for accommodation in the region. There are also places to camp available at some of the National Parks as well, many with facilities, others isolated.
