Great Dividing Range Escarpment, Snowy Mountains Highway NSW

Touring Australia: Bemboka Lookout at the South East Forests National Park. The Snowy Mountains Highway takes you from the Monaro Plains (the beginning of the Great Dividing Range) through the Bemboka and Bega Valleys towards the Sapphire Coast.

On the Sapphire Coast you will find long sandy beaches, stunning national parks and great fishing.

Bemboka

Heading down the escarpment: At the township of Bemboka there is a historic pioneer walk in the town walk. First settled in the mid nineteenth century, the town surrounds produced dairy products for the colony of NSW.

Heading up the escarpment: The scenery here is some of the most beautiful found in Australia and the road takes you to the historic towns in the Snowy Mountains Region, including Nimmitabel and Cooma.

Bemboka Lookout - This place is usually shrouded in the mists. On a clear day, you can see the farmlands below stretching towards the coast, on the Snowy Mountains Highway. A great Australia tourist drive route, the highway makes its way from the Snowy Mountains to the South Coast of NSW.

Snowy Mountains

The Alpine region of the Snowy Mountains has excellent skiing and snowsports in winter and remains beautiful any time of year. You can find wild rivers flowing through steep mountain gorges. Summer meadow wildflower displays. There are walks and longer treks that take you past fantastic mountain views, gorges and valleys.

The heart of the Snowy Mountains is the Mt Kosciuszko National Park. The mountains here are the highest on the continent, including Mount Kosciuszko itself and Mt Townsend, the waters that start here become some of Australia’s most important rivers.

Alpine Drive

The Snowy Mountains Alpine Way is another great tourist drive found in Australia, it makes its way from Cooma to Khancoban through the Jindabyne snowfields, past Alpine scenery and Mt Kosciuszko, through Dead Horse Gap and down valleys.
