Shoalhaven NSW on the South Coast from Sydney

Shoalhaven, south of Sydney, is a popular tourist region in New South Wales with Australians as well as overseas visitors.

At the same time, it is not as popular with visitors as the North Coast though it has all the charm, making it an ideal place for a Sydney getaway.

Berry NSW

Berry, a historic township just inland but on Princes Highway, is a place to hunt for antiques and original artworks. As well as a number of preserved National Heritage buildings, there is a museum and a number of wineries nearby.

Seven mile Beach National Park is due east and is good for swimming, windsurfing and surfing, as well as fishing and long coastal walks.

Berry also has a firmly established coffee culture, with trendy to the fashionable in its growing collection cafés.

Murramang National Park

Murramang Aboriginal Area has middens, mounds of seashells, fish, animal and bird bones. The area is significant to aborigines with various tools found dating back to over 10,000 years ago.

Durras Lake Murramarang NP, surrounding Durras Lake, is a beautiful coast area with gum and rainforests as well as pristine beaches.

Nowra NSW

Nowra, next to the Shoalhaven River, along with Bomaderry on the north bank is the agricultural centre of the area as well as being a popular resort spot.

The river has watersports, there is a museum in the old Police Station building and you can visit Nowra Animal Park. At Coolangatta there is a historical village with buildings originally built by convicts at the beginning of the 1800s.

Shoalhaven Cruises and Tours

There are a number of cruises operating in the area and there are horseriding tours. Moreton National Park has drive to lookouts, including one at Tianjara Falls. There are also Fitzroy and Belmore Falls at the park, all 3 quite spectacular.

A great self drive tour is up to Cambewarra Lookout. There, you can experience grand sweeping views of the Shoalhaven Valley and all the way to the NSW Coast.

There is a good range of accommodation in the area, with seaside cabins, backpacker hostels, hotels, historic inns and motels. View Hotels in NSW.

Best Time to Visit Shoalhaven

Summer is ideal for the beach lifestyle while Spring is for the wildflowers and gardens. Winter gives you opportunity to sight whales, penguins and fur seals. More about Touring the South Coast NSW.
