Photo: The Three Sisters as seen from Echo Point Carved by the weather and gravity, the Three Sisters formation is what remains (for now) of this sandstone ridge. As the bottom of the ridges weather away the heavy sandstone above collapses leaving sharp cliffs. This process has continued for millions of years. You can get closeup views of the 3 Sisters from various lookouts along the Cliff Dr. in Katoomba and at the Scenic World tourist attraction. There is a cable car ride that offers panoramic views of the mountains and valleys below - it has 360 degree glass windows and a glass bottom. The tourist attraction also claims the steepest incline railway ride in the world. Originally built to haul coal from the bottom of the cliff, it now takes passengers on a very sharp downhill ride. At the bottom, there are walks you can explore. For a detailed study of the geology of the Blue Mountains see The Blue Mountains, NSW.
