The twisted streets in the lower part of Sydney are a reminder of how the village grew into a city during the early years of the colony. When Governor Lachlan Macquarie arrived in 1810, he had a grand vision for Sydney and took steps to plan grander buildings and wider and straighter streets.

Governor Macquarie

Governor Macquarie was also a reformist and explorer, under him, the colony began the slow transformation from penal settlement into a city. Amongst bringing order to the burgeoning settlement, he also established others, such as Campbelltown, Windsor and Richmond. This has made him a key influence and figure in the early history of Australia. One thing you will notice in Australia is just how many places and streets have been named after him.
