Statues were used on the larger Sydney buildings to celebrate the colonial explorers and other well known community leaders of New South Wales and Britain. We built this City from Rock and Stone: By far, most of these Sydney buildings were made from the coloured sandstone found throughout the Sydney region. The Colony of New South Wales boomed in the 1800s with sheep and cattle pastoral wealth, and the 1850s gold rushes. Sydney buildings and architecture built in the Colonial Era reflect this early wealth.
