Mountains along the Monaro HighwayPhoto: These mountains began to form 800 to 400 million years ago. The Monaro Plains region has been inundated by the ocean many times before. Much of the snowy mountains is made from alluvial deposits which have risen to the heights they are today through the wrinkling of the earth’s crust over time. Volcanic activity did the rest, the remains of volcanoes and their plugs mark here and most of the east coast of Australia. The Glass House Mountains in Queensland are also remnants of this volcanic activity. The most recent volcanic activity in Australia happened at Mount Schank and Mount Gambier, some 5000 years ago. Most of the attractions mentioned here are within a days drive of Canberra. Canberra itself offers National Museums of world class standard, devoted to the arts, culture, Australia history, industry and many more. Queanbeyan is located at an old crossing of the Molonglo and Queanbeyan rivers, being conveniently located on the way to the snowfields it has virtually everything a skier would need. It also has a lot of heritage, you can explore the town on a Heritage Tour. At the nearby Googong foreshores, there is excellent fishing, canoeing and sailing. Things to do in the park include fishing alongside sparkling streams, horse riding and bushwalking. There are trails for mountain biking with a number of picnic places and you can camp in designated areas.
