Map showing location of Fitzroy Island: Tropical North - Cairns Map.
Fitzroy Island has had a long history as a recreation spot, Aboriginals have been hunting, fishing and relaxing here for thousands of years, naming the island Koba (or Gabar). The island today is still as beautiful as ever, a tropical island with rainforest, stunning beaches and surrounding coral reefs, filled with colourful fish and other marine life.
Captain Cook on his epic voyage of exploring and charting the east coast of Australia named the island in 1778. Located about 45 minutes by Jetcat Ferry from Cairns, you get to enjoy the scenic ride of the lush coast with views of the Coral Sea.
Great for families, couples or singles wishing to experience a getaway can come here for a day or longer, either camping or enjoying the luxury of the 4.5 star island resort.
The National Park itself is strictly protected due to its strong cultural links to the Gurabana Gungandji people, its history, as well as the marine animals and flora. It occupies a 324 hectares of the 339 hectares of the island.
The waters and reefs are great for snorkelling and diving, particularly on the resort side of the island. There is a dive shop on the island, where you can everything for needed for diving here. There are also kayaks for hire as well g.
You can explore the park on the established walking tracks. A track on the north part of the island will take you to the lighthouse overlooking Little Fitzroy Island as well as the highest peak on the island, where you can get excellent views of the surrounds.
On the south side of the island, there is the walk to Nudey Beach (Seen in the Photo) and then along the edge of the island through rainforest.
By the beach there is a camp ground with up to 28 places available. Phone Resort Reception on (07) 4044 6700 for more information.
