Brisbane - Moreton Bay Islands

Moreton Bay, beautiful and relatively unspoilt is protected by the islands of Bribie, Moreton and North Stradbroke. There are actually 350 islands in the bay, the main ones are accessible by ferry while Bribie Island is connected by landbridge to the mainland.

On the islands, there are beaches great for swimming, fishing, diving and snorkelling. Walks around the main islands offer ocean views, sand dunes, national park forests and fresh water lakes.

The bay itself is protected by the Moreton Bay Marine Park - ideal for seeing dolphins, whales, green turtles, manta rays and a whole host of fish and other marine life in their environment.

Bribie Island

Bribie Island, located on the northern section of the bay, set apart from the mainland by Pumicestone Passage and the open waters of Moreton Bay. It is one of the few islands here connected by bridge.

A sand island, it is relatively flat and has kilometres of white sandy beaches with some mangroves. A network of cycle paths and walks criss-cross the island, making it a great place for families, with great swimming and windsurfing at the southern tip, protected from the surf by Moreton Island.

The Bribie Island National Park covers most of the foreshores with parks and reserves covering about 80% of the island in total. With the beaches and haven for watersports, it makes a great Brisbane getaway destination.

There are numerous restaurants and eateries, fresh seafood is a speciality.

Camping is available, permits are required: Contact the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service QPWS on +061 7 3408 8451. There are some hotels and motels, caravan parks and apartments available. During school holidays it is wise to book ahead.

St Helena Island

St Helena Island was originally used as a convict penal settlement. Many of the ruins are still there, while protected, there are tours available that explain the turbulant history of these early days.

St Helena Island National Park, opened in Oct 1979, was the state’s first historic national park. There is a museum, the prisoner’s cemetery, a sugar mill, lime kiln, blacksmith, kitchen and cell block.

Moreton Island

Here, you can find some of the world’s tallest dunes, freshwater lakes surrounded by sparkling white sands. Moreton Island is one of the largest sand islands in the world.

Moreton Island is virtually covered by the National Park, there are no sealed roads. Access is by launch vessels, three of which operate from Holt Street Wharf Pinkenba.

Tangalooma Beach is the only resort located on the island, you can explore the island for a day or more in comfort. Some camping is available, permits are required - Contact the QPWS on +061 7 3408 8451 for more information.

North Stradbroke Island

Stunning scenery with long pearly surf beaches, North Stradbroke Island is popular with visitors for its rugged wilderness. Like Moreton Island, there are deep fresh water lakes fringed by sparkling white sandy beaches.

Whale Watching Cruises

You can catch Whale watching cruises - available at Moreton Bay June to November. There are tours available of the islands, including eco tours and cruises. Spot dolphins, dugongs and a myriad of marine life.

Activities and Things to Do

Essentially everything you can think of in terms of watersports is available here, diving, sailing, cruising. On the beaches of the bay there are good swimming and snorkelling opportunities, on the ocean side of the islands plenty of surf spots - including high dunes for sand tobogganing, Or be a little more laid back with fishing, or lazing by a dazzling fresh water blue lagoon.
