See the South East Coast of SA on the map South East South Australia Map

The district offers much to the visitor, great wines are grown here and the white sandy beaches, coastal scenery of cliffs and sheltered bays are delightful.

Popular Getaway

Robe, about 374kms from Adelaide, is a popular getaway, particularly on weekends. There are a number of historic buildings there and the coast on both sides of Robe are known for their beauty.

Mt. Gambier

Visit Mt. Gambier, the remains of a long extinct volcano and the Blue Lake. In fact there are four lakes, with the Blue Lake changing from a dull gray to brilliant blue in summer and back again at the end. There are Limestone Caves that you can explore beneath the city.

Coonawarra Wine Region

Coonawarra, near Penola is a famed wine growing area, particularly their reds. But there is also the Mount Benson, near Robe, as well as Padthaway, Mount Gambier, and Wrattonbully, all with claims to fame for their wines.

Outstanding red wines are grown here in the Coonawarra, with the Cabernet Sauvignon celebrated as being amongst the best Australia produces.

The secret lies not only with the weather, but with the soil. Named Terra Rossa by the locals, with a thin layer of calcrete below and deep limestone, giving it a full, yet distinct Australian flavour, instantly recognised by wine connoisseurs around the world.

Other quality red varietals grown here include Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Merlot grapes while the whites include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Semillon.

Tours

See the constantly re-forming sand and dunes coastline. Go diving, snorkelling or take a fishing cruise. Take a wine tasting tour to Coonawarra or Mt. Gambier. Hike on the 130km beach and see the bird and wildlife of the protected native fauna.

Accommodation

There is a wide variety of accommodation in the region, with luxury units and apartments available for holiday rental. As well, there are many other options such as hotels, motels, cabins, caravan parks, and bed and breakfast places to stay to suit any budget.

Dining

Both Kingston S.E. and Robe offer great seafood experiences. There are many restaurants and eateries on the Limestone Coast that offer succulant &rlquo;Rock Lobster’ and other shell fish, caught that morning.

Even the fish and chips shops can offer a great meal as well as many of the pubs. The Coonawarra has gourmet restaurants with fresh local produce including of course, the best of the local wines.
