Kangaroo Valley is situated between escarpments of sandstone that have risen high above the valley, worn away by the Kangaroo river over the many years. The valley is heritage listed, not only for its pioneering history but its flora and native animals. Much of its surrounds are occupied by Morton National Park and the Cambewarra Range Nature Reserve. Getting there from the NSW South Coast: You can take the tourist route to the valley from Nowra on the Moss Vale Road, or from Berry, past Berry Mountain on Kangaroo Valley Road. There is plenty of scenery along the way. At the Pioneer Farm Settlement shows what life was like in the mid 19th Century, having preserved cottages, a blacksmith’s working shop, a dairy and machinery displays. There are photographs and exhibits relating to the history of the valley on display.
Kangaroo Valley Places to Visit and Activities
- Visit Black Ash Mountain reserve.
- Drive up to Cambewarra Lookout for the fantastic views of the South Coast.
- Go canoeing up to the upper reaches of the Kangaroo River.
- Visit Kangaroo Valley village, classified by the National Trust and home to the Pioneer Museum.
- Walk across Hampden Bridge, a grand medieval design suspension bridge, swim and picnic by the river.
- Take your time to wander through the art and craftsman galleries and antique shops in the village.
- Get a National Parks guide to explore the many graded bushwalks in and around the valley.
