Layers of Time

The continent of Australia drifted over a volcanic hotspot over millions of years, leaving behind the remnants of scores of volcanic sites all along the East Coast. The Glasshouse Mountains in Queensland and other volcanoes even further north are also part of the same volcanic activity.

The island is the remnant of a volcano cap.

Much of the surface of Australia is a sandy soil, below it, layers of sedimentary sandstone and limestone. The limestone comes from deep ocean deposits of the remains of marine life such as sea shells that lived millions of years earlier than the volcanic activity.
