Using an Overseas Drivers Licence in Australia

The Basics:

As in some other countries, the laws and regulations for driving in Australia do differ in each state. To make it easier to drive and rent cars here, it is advisable to get an international driving license, with the exception of certain countries that have made treaties regarding a license to drive equal to one’ s home country.

Unless in English, you will need a translation of your license as well as your actual license with you when you drive. It will also be handy to have your passport with you when picking up a vehicle for use in Australia from a car rental agency, some actually require it.

Any conditions or limitations placed on your license in the country you have your license from will also apply here.

Insurance

Comprehensive insurance when hiring a vehicle (Collision Damage Waiver) can buy you peace of mind, however it can also add substantially to the overall cost. This is also referred to as liability or excess.

Third party insurance is already covered when you rent a car or other vehicle, however there is usually

Even when fully insured, in the event of the car being stolen or damaged, you may have the initial Collision Damage Waiver deducted from your credit card. You will then have to collect the CDW charges from the relevant insurance company.

Your travel insurance may already cover the Collision Damage Waiver, check the details of any insurance cover you may have.
