Bridge Street was so named as it had a small bridge crossing the stream that provided water for the original convict settlers and their guards. The bridge has disappeared and the stream, went underground, piped and buried under the streets as the city grew.

There are occassional tours of this underground stream, now called the Tank Stream. It played an important role in early Sydney Town, the tour gives a truly unique view and understanding of this far flung outpost of the British Empire in the late 1700s.
