Situated on the Hunter River, Maitland, a historical town has numerous buildings dating back to the 19th Century, as well as the notorious Maitland Gaol. Is it haunted by tortured souls in the night? Take a torchlight tour and find out for yourself.

Those wishing to experience many of the other buildings and sights should take one or more of the marked heritage trails in and around town. With historic buildings dating back to the early 19th Century, it makes for a pleasant walk.

Maitland Gaol

The jail has a long history of housing some of Australia’s most violent criminals. A number of those convicted of the most serious crimes were executed here. Now a NSW Heritage site, there are themed tours available. You can even try a group sleepover, if you dare.

North over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, take the F3 Freeway to the Sydney - Newcastle Highway. At the end, take the the New England Freeway. NSW Trains are available from Sydney Central, Strathfield and Hornsby via Countrylink (Phone 13 22 32).
