Set on the coast of New South Wales, Wollongong has beautiful beaches with a dramatic backdrop of green and sandstone of the Illawarra Escarpment.

The 3rd largest city in NSW, Wollongong has a multi-cultural history and is a University town, adding to its international feel and cosmopolitan outlook, with people from over 100 countries having made their home there.

The variety of restaurants, theatres, cinemas, pubs and clubs make for an active nightlife, while the art galleries, museums, botanic gardens, beaches and activities offers plenty to do during the day.

Gong Shuttle Visitor Bus

Note: There is a free shuttle (green) bus service that operates in the city. Runs every 10 to 20 minutes. The service operates in both directions on a loop from Wollongong Station to Wollongong University via Wollongong Hospital, Burelli Street and the Innovation Campus. Look for the bus stops that display the shuttle logo (green) route numbers 55A and 55C.

Wollongong Things to Do

For something different, visit Australia’s Industry World, to get an inside view of industries that helped shape modern Australia.

The Cockatoo Run is a leisurely steam engine ride up the Illawarra escarpment from the coast, with dramatic views and lush rainforest scenery. There are Dolphin and Whale watching cruises at Jervis Bay, go kayaking and bushwalking, or even learn how to surf!

For the More Daring

Take a tandem hang glide from Bald Hill at Stanwell Park. Or go skydiving over the beach from 14,000 feet!

Arts and Culture

Articles Fine Art Gallery, in Stanwell Park is home to artist John Vander and exhibits works by major Australian artists and craftsman.

Nan Tien Temple, at Berkeley Road, Berkeley NSW, is a gathering place for devotees but also provides tours for visitors, there is also a museum there, a dining room and a tea house for delish vegetarian delites. Phone 02 4272 0600 for tour information.

Getting to Wollongong

Located just an hours drive south from Sydney, to get to Wollongong take the Princes Highway from Rockdale through Sutherland onto the F6 Freeway. This route gives great views of the Royal National Park and the Illiwarra coastal strip. See Greater Sydney Map

There is also a regular train service from Central Station in Sydney. You can even take a bike on the train with you and explore the city on your own.

Further South

There are quite a few good cafes and eateries offering good coffee and restaurants offering cosmopolitan cuisines and fresh seafood.
