Yerranderie Ghost Town
The Yerranderie Ghost Town, once a silver mining town of two thousand residents, now lies abandoned. Access is by 4WD from Oberon in the west on a dirt road since the establishment of the Warragamba Dam cut off its access from Sydney. Popular with people interested in history and heritage, as well as photographers and 4WD drive explorers. Accommodation is available, see the website.
There are also abandoned mines, some with mining equipment left long ago. However, the eerie silence, ruins and other abandoned buildings of the town itself, hark back to earlier times giving visitors a unique view of life in early Australia.
Camping is also available here, the area surrounding the town is native bushland and worth exploring on its own: Yerranderie Regional Park.
Kanangra-Boyd National Park
The rugged terrain of Kanangra-Boyd National Park is marked by very deep valleys and ridge tops with an abundance of wildlife. Described as serene and majestic, the park will leave you with life long memories. There is camping available, mountain biking and canyoning are popular activities here: Kanangra-Boyd National Park.
Nattai National Park
This natural wilderness region protects the Nattai River, the Hawkesbury cliffs, and the many animals and plants that live here. Animals that can be seen, if your quiet, can include dingos, emus, grey kangaroos, koalas wallabies, wallaroos and wombats. If your really lucky you can spot platypus playing in the river. At Mt Jellore, there is excellent lookout out over the park over the valleys and mountains of eucalypt. Camping is available: Nattai National Park
