From glorious views of splendour from high mountain tops to historical places, Tasmania has them all. Great places to visit and see in North West Tasmania:

Launceston

Launceston: This historical city is Tasmania’s second largest, from here you can explore the north west region with ease.

One of the great ways to explore more of the historical city of Launceston is to take a cruise on the Tamar. This grand river flows into Bass Strait. You can take either a Lunch or Dinner Cruise for great views from the city docks. Now restored, Launceston Seaport, has an excellent choice of waterfront eateries.

From the seaport, you can walk along a zig zagging boardwalk to Cataract Gorge, with is cliffs and chairlift that you can take to enjoy the fantastic views.

Another must do thing while in Launceston: Take a tour of Boags brewery, for a tasteful insight into this Tasmanian producer of beer.

Tamar Valley and River

Tamar Valley, through which the river flows is also a renowned Tasmanian wine region known for its cool climate wines. Try to check some of the cellar doors at the vineyards for wine tasting. One the great Australian food and wine trails.

Indeed, there are 32 vineyards for you to try on the Tamar food and wine trail, with distinctive bright blue and yellow signs to point you along the way. Follow them, from either the city centre or the airport.

Grape varieties grown in Tamar Valley include Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Merlot.

Surrounds of Launceston

At the Bridestowe Lavender Farm, there are 256 acres of stunning vistas of lavender coloured flowers in the months of December and January. Throughout the whole year, there are beautiful gardens to enjoy, as well as a visitor centre where you can learn more about this wonderful flower.

Flinders Island, off the coast of Tasmania to the north can be reached by plane from Launceston. Here you can explore the island’s wilderness, with beaches, mountain ranges and diverse animals and flora. The surrounding waters are sparkling, with excellent fishing and boating opportunities.

Devonport, another historical town of Tasmania, is just to the north east of the city with a scenic drive along the way. To the south, Ross is a classic 19th century village, with tree lined streets and early 1800s homes, many that have been Heritage listed. There are still cobble pathways.

Perth is another of Tasmania’s historic towns. There are more than 40 historic buildings here, including churches, private homes and shop fronts from the 1800s.

National Parks

Also in the surrounds of Launceston, there are the National Parks of Narawntapu, great for viewing wildlife and the Ben Lomond National Park.

Ben Lomond National Park is a place to go for rock climbing, with extensive bushwalking tracks to explore. An alpine region, there are also good places to enjoy skiing and other snow sports here during winter.
