Gold, discovered in the region in 1851, caused the boom town conditions that became Ballarat. The name derived from two local Aboriginal words, ’Balla’ and ’Arat’, the former meaning elbow resting and the latter meaning place.
There are numerous tours available exploring Ballarat and surrounds, both from Melbourne Australia and in the town itself.
