The Royal Botanic Gardens, located alongside the Yarra River, occupies more than 38 hectares of landscaped land with over 52,000 plants from all over the world. There is much Australian Flora as well, of course, including rainforest plantings.
First opened in 1846, the Botanic Gardens were planned and managed by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller and William Guilfoyle. A well known and respected botanist, Baron von Mueller was responsible for the many wide and varied selection of plants grown there, while Guilfoyle planned the lakes and scenic walks that are located in the gardens.
