Hobart Surrounds - Exploring Tasmania

A short drive north of Hobart city, the Freycinet National Park is one of the most popular destinations in Tasmania to go, see and visit. Other attractions in the surrounds include the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, Runnymede, Port Arthur and the Cascade Brewery.

National Parks

Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park is another place well worth visiting. Here, you can you can just enjoy the spectacular scenery, or hike the Overland Track, an eighty kilometre seven day journey through some of the most dramatically beautiful wilderness areas still remaining on this planet.

Freycinet Peninsula, with its many white sand beaches, rugged wilderness and bounteous wildlife continues to attract visitors. It has an extensive network of tracks, allowing you to take in its many aspects of coastal vistas.

Mt Wellington

One of the most spectacular views you will find of Hobart is from Mt Wellington, lying on the south west of the city. A must do activity for visitors to Hobart, the mountain provides views of the city and surrounds.

Mt Wellington reaches a height of over 1270 metres and in winter often has snow. To the east you can see the ocean and to the west the vast wilderness areas of the World Heritage regions and National Parks. You can even bicycle down the mountain for glorious 360 degree panoramic views.

Cruising the River Derwent and picturesque Hobart Harbour to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory is another enjoyable way to enjoy views of the city. As well as give you a chance to sample the freshest of chocolate(s).

Other cruises available take you to places like the Southern Ocean and Bruny Island, a wildlife preserve.

Cascade Brewery

Built in the 1820s, the Cascade Brewery is backed by a pristine forest on the Hobart Rivulet. Only 10 minutes from the city centre by bus or car, there are tours available.

A popular place to visit, if not for the love of beer, then for its historical significance and heritage buildings.

Winery Tours

From Hobart, there are a number of winery tours available. There are numerous award winning wineries just minutes away from the city centrey, at Moorilla and the Coal Valley Region. You can visit these cooler clime wineries, including Moorilla, HomeHill Winery, Coal Valley Vineyard, Pooley Vineyard and Meadowbank Estate.

Other renowned wineries include Piper Brook, St Matthias, Rosevears Estate and Tamar Ridge. Many of the wineries have cellar doors, allowing you to sample before you buy.

Hobart and Surrounds Weather

Remember, the island’s southerly position makes for very cold winters so hiking and camping are not easy options at that time of the year.
