Australia Sports - A Visitors Guide

Australia, despite its small populace, has produced champions in many world class sports, including Swimming, Surfing, Cricket, Field Hockey, Women’s Basketball and Rugby, to name a few.

Australian Athletes

Australian athletes also manage to grab their share of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the Commonwealth, Olympic and Paralympic Games and have been competing internationally as ‘Australians’ even before the federation of the country in 1901.

From the very beginning, Australians loved sport, indeed if you include indigenous Australian Aboriginals, as you should, it goes back more than 40,000 years.

Australian Sport Favourites

There are over a hundred and twenty national sporting organisations registered in Australia, each dedicated to their sport, their athletes and the younger upcoming talent.

Soccer has become the number 1 sport for boys, while girls choose netball as their current no. 1 favourite.

Australian Cricket

Needless to say, but I will say it anyway, Australia’s Cricket prowess still continues to take the world stage, competing against other, much larger cricketing nations, including India, England and Pakistan. These countries love their Cricket too.

The number one team sport for Australian girls is netball. For boys it is soccer. With the Socceroos reaching the final 16 in the Soccer World Cup, Australia’s interest in the sport has soared.

A lot of hard work has gone into this and will continue to do so.

International Sports

As part of its international relations program, the Australian Sports Commission promotes international cooperation in sports between Australia and other countries.

It does this by the provision of not only resources, but services and facilities as well. This includes nations in Southern Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
