There are vast distances that separate most of the towns in this region. Always seek reliable local advice before travelling in these areas, take adequate supplies of petrol, food and water. Also, permits are needed before entering Aboriginal Lands.
Lake Disappointment, surrounded by sand dunes, is a large saline lake where birdlife congregates, the area is heritage listed.
The second largest national park in Australia is Rudall River National Park, while the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve is over 180,000 hectares with varied desert wildlife such as red kangaroos, emus and reptiles.
