Ebenezer Church

This small church, called Ebenezer Church is in fact the oldest surviving church building in Australia. It is still in use today.

Ebenezers Church began as a small group of families settling at Portland Head in 1802. Later joined by more settlers, they had regular house meetings and services at Ebenezer Mount. The church building was built in 1809 from sandstone and timber.

Despite early setbacks, the ground here was fertile and fed by the Nepean River, allowing the community to prosper. Occasionally, the river swells and the area floods, re-fertilizing the soil despite best efforts to control the water.
