Great Ocean Road Memorial

At Eastern View along the Great Ocean Road there is the Memorial Arch, dedicated to those that served in World War I and built this wonderful road. Built from 1918 to 1930, the men employed on the road were those that had served in the military during the Great War.

Living in tents, the work was difficult and physically hard. The amount of daylight decided the hours worked, there was no limitation of eight hours a day.

Dynamite blasted the extremely hard basalt rock, while horses and carts and men with pickaxes and shovels cleared the way and made it smooth.

On weekends, due to the distances involved, few were able to get home to enjoy themselves. Fishing or hunting were the main weekend activities.
